He followed his father into the army and served approximately three and a half years in the 22nd Cavalry of the British Indian Army, reaching the rank of Dafadar — a cavalry non-commissioned rank, the equivalent of Havildar in the infantry. He then resigned and returned to Chak 140 GB to devote himself to religious and social reform.
