Why this page exists, separately

Family testimony is historically valuable. It is presented here as attributed testimony, clearly separated from independently documented fact — not automatically converted into documented fact simply because it is detailed, plausible, or comes from a source close to the family. The published family accounts this archive draws on are essays and remarks by a grandson, published in 2026; that does not make the material false, and there is no reason to think it is. It does mean a heritage archive should source-label it clearly rather than absorb it into a neutral voice. Keeping the two registers visibly separate makes the archive more authoritative, not less.

Each item below records who says it, when the account was published, what corroboration exists, its evidence tier, and the archival lead that could move it into the documented record.

Surety, mortgage, and declined reimbursement (family account)

According to family testimony, after the Akali published on the Nankana massacre in 1921 and the authorities imposed a ₹40,000 fine, he personally stood surety, prepared to auction his own agricultural land; and in about 1924–25, with the SGPC needing ₹1.5 lakh to pursue an appeal to the Privy Council and only half raised from the community, he mortgaged two murabas — roughly 50 acres — of his own land to supply the remaining ₹75,000. After his death, when the case was won, the family declined the SGPC’s offer of reimbursement. None of this has been independently corroborated; it is presented as family testimony, not as documented fact.

The declined sum and a students’ corpus (family account)

Family tradition further holds that the declined sum was redirected into a corpus supporting higher studies for Sikh students, several of whom studied abroad. This is explicitly described, even by its narrators, as undocumented.

The working partnership with Master Tara Singh (family account)

Family accounts describe the working partnership with Master Tara Singh: that Samundri, despite minimal formal schooling, supplied strategic and political judgment, while the better-educated Tara Singh set it down on paper and carried it into print. The same accounts hold that Tara Singh, after Samundri’s death, pressed both the British and the independent Indian state to recognise him formally as a prisoner of conscience and freedom fighter. Neither claim is independently documented.

Invitation to the Congress Working Committee (family account)

According to his grandson’s published account, the Congress-led national movement sought to draw Samundri into its Working Committee in recognition of his capacity to fuse religious reform with national liberation. This is a family-derived claim and is not independently documented.
